Rental car insurance: Do you need to purchase it?

7/12/2010 8:15:06 AM

If you’re planning on a personal vacation this summer and you are leaving Cleveland, Ohio or one of its surrounding suburbs, like Twinsburg, Ohio, you may be renting an automobile on your travels.

Do you need to buy the auto insurance at the car rental counter?  Our website has a great video on this topic.  Go to www.scinsure.com and go to our Learning Center and   then Webinars/Videos.  Here is a summary of what to consider.

First contact your insurance agent or carrier to see what your personal policy covers.  Also contact your credit card company as they may offer some insurance benefits.

The limits you have on your personal policy will usually extend to the rental car when it is rented for personal use.  Again, check with your agent.  If you’re on a business trip and you’re renting in the name of the business your personal insurance policy will not extend coverage.

Usually the car rental company will offer the following:

            1.  Loss Damage or Collision damage waiver.  This includes coverage for damage or theft, loss of use, towing and administrative fees.

            2.  Liability which offers financial responsibility form lawsuits.

            3.  Personal accident insurance or medical insurance – covers you and your passengers for medical and ambulance bills as a result of an auto accident in the rental vehicle.

            4.  Personal effects coverage – one’s homeowners may provide coverage here.

Remember to check with your current insurance agent or carrier to see if you need to purchase auto coverage at the rental counter.  Also go to www.scinsure.com to watch the video.  Here is to a happy and safe summer.
