IT'S DEER MATING SEASON - BE CAREFUL ON OHIO ROADS

7/12/2010 8:15:06 AM
Accidents claimed the lives of six Ohioans after getting in car crashes involving deer, and most of the accidents happen at this time of the year.

You only have to look along side the roadway and see deer standing, or crossing the road on a regular basis.

"We routinely report many  deer-vehicle collision claims each year and with each claim costing more than $2,500 the total damages can easily be more than $100,000 each year." says Nancy Shoop, Claims Manager at Strachan-Casale, Inc. an independent insurance agency in Twinsburg, Ohio.

Shoop says that is part of living in this part of the state, you just come to expect them. She sees at least four or five deer each morning before work.

The Hudson Police report that when the mating season starts, the deer are more active. Caution is thrown to the wind and mating instincts take over causing animals to frequently jump out of the woods and onto the roads.

If you see one deer crossing the roadway, slow down and keep your eyes open, as you will most certainly see an other deer or two following.

According to the Ohio Insurance Institute, there were 24,590 car crashes involving deer last year. Here are the top five counties: Summit County had the most crashes with 601, then Hamilton and Richland counties both having 592, Stark County had 536 and Williams county had 523.
